Patches with Merrow Borders

The patch with the Merrow, or Overlock, Border is the most commonly.  Our Merrow Borders are usually 1/8" thick in diameter and run the perimeter of the patch.  Merrow Borders can only be sewn on patches in regular shapes.  This is the most preferred border, as it gives the patch a finished look.
Patches with Cut Borders

Cut border patches resemble patches with burned/laser edged borders, as there is no overlock or merrow edge around the perimenter of the patch.  Cut borders are most common for irregularly-shaped patches. The patch is merely cut to shape, with a thin strip of material showing all around the patch.  The disadvantage of the cut border patches is that the strip of material around the patch may start to fray over time.  This is why we recommend the Burned Border Patch over the Cut Border Patch.
Patches with Burned/Laser-edged Borders

Patches with Burned or Laser-edged Borders are more desirable than Cut Border patches, as the edges are treated with heat to prevent fraying of the thread and materials.  However, this process is more labor-intensive than the Cut or Merrow borders.  In addition, we must stitch around the perimeter of the patch first before laser cutting the edge to further ensure against fraying.  This increases the number of stitches and the cost of the patch.  Burned Border patches are recommended when the patch is irregular in shape, or the size of the patch is too small to be merrowed.  Appliqués commonly have Burned Borders.
